Mercedes Austin: Founder and Designer
Mercedes Austin has always had a passion to create art. From the age of 6, friends in school were hiring her (with candy) to draw some of their favorite cartoon characters.
The enthusiasm for drawing soon tuned into a love of rearranging her childhood and teenage rooms and drawing floorplans and window shopping for housewares became a fun past time. "I was always the kid who ended up hanging out with my friends parents. I've always had a great skill of listening. Listening and duplicating what my clients are looking for, even sometimes before they fully know what they are looking for has been and is one of my favorite things about my job."
With a college background in art, a family-filled with artisans and craftsmen and classical training in mosaics in Italy, Mercedes set out to begin Mercury Mosaics in 2002. "I wanted a way to build a business, make art, influence design standards & provide jobs to people all in one. Handmade tile and mosaics were PERFECT. My favorite thing about handmade tile is that the process is historic & the design has a full range of being ancient to modern." Tile can go in every space and we will see to that one interior at a time.
